The University of Thessaly is the only higher education institution in central Greece. It spans 4 towns, nanely Volos, Larissa, Trikala, and Karditsa, and has 17 Departments organized in 3 Schools, namely Engineering, Mericine, and Pedagogics. The University enrols 1.000 students and has 1.000 staff members, 400 of which are teaching staff and 600 supporting technical and administrative staff.

The University has been active in technology-enhanced learning activities since 2000. It has developed on-line services for the management of the learning process as well as learning content, management services with a focus on mathematics, guidelines and training material for the effective educational use of sychronous distance communication channels, educational content for vocational training, and more. Over the past few years the University is active on the deployment of serious games in education, with a focus on primary, secondary, and professional education.

The Centre for Research and Technology – Thessaly (CE.RE.TE.TH) is a legal, non-profit entity organized under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), of the Greek Ministry of Development. CERETETH was established in January 2006.

The Center’s main mission is to conduct basic, applied, and technological research that leads to new products and services with industrial, economic and social impact.

CERETETH’s organization includes the Central Administration (CA) and four Institutes: the Mechatronics Institute (IMTRONICS), the Institute of Technology and Management of Agricultural Ecosystems(ITEMA), the Institute of Biomedical Research & Technology (BIOMED, and the Institute of Human Performance & Rehabilitation (PerfoTech).

The Centre's mission includes the following objectivest it strengthens industrial growth of region and the business dexterity through existing companies and the creation of new ones that will be based on “knowledge economy”; it creates an institution that will provide services and transfer the research and technological achievements of the Center to industry and will help the establishment of specialized spin-off companies in areas such as agromaterials, food and drinks, and biofuels (biodiesel and bioethanol); it participates in large scale research activities with flexibility and the appropriate means of technology transfer, such as the “Technology Park of Thessaly”; it supports research and services related to problems of the Region of Thessaly


             Centre for Flexible Learning, Sweden

Soderhamn is a coastal city in the northern part of Sweden. The municipality has 5 primary school units (6-15 years old), one upper secondary unit (16-19 years old) and one learning centre with altogether 4000 students.

CFL (Centre for Flexible Learning), www.cfl.soderhamn.se,  is the centre for all types of education on various levels, from basic education and upper secondary education up to university level and is involved in teacher training activities through ODL by providing support at all levels of the educational process.

CFL has coordinated many local and regional projects, both EU and domestic. CFL has been selected as “best practices” in Europe by a study initiated by the EC (DG Education and culture).
Finally, CFL is the UNESCO-UNEVOC National Centre for Sweden.


 

                   HiST Contract Research, Norway

HCR was established as an independent contract research organization in 2004. HCR wishes to contribute to the development of new technologies that promote sustainable development within the society, by linking local problems with global research topics. HCR offers as its main product applied research in various disciplines, and within Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The ICT field includes research within the area of knowledge engineering and intelligent interfaces, with a particular focus towards exploiting flexible training solutions, and high quality streaming video solutions. The organization has a high level of competence and experience within the areas of development and production e-learning services for company adapted training, as well as inclusion of blended learning methods that utilize video and learning design solutions.

The school has 140 students and 15 teachers. The school runs a "day-long program" with specialists focusing on IT, culture, and sports based on creative and interdisciplinary and cooperative principles. There is also a very active IT lab to support the activities. Besides the students of Greek origin the school also enrolls children with several other national backgrounds. As such the school actively exploits the multinational background of the students to promote tolerance in the presence of diversity. Finally, the school participates in an on-going manner in educational projects focusing on the environment, culture, social issues, and technology at the National as well as the European level.  


                                                      ZS Kolin, Czech Republic

ZS Kolin is a basic school with pupils of ages 6-15 years. The school has about 320 pupils. In addition, tt has a second facility in the village of Sendrazice (4 km away) with pupils of ages of 6-10. The Sednrazice section has about 40 children.

The school is divided into two grades: 1st grade with children of ages 6-10 and 2nd grade, with ages 11-15. It is located in the town of Kolin, in the central part of the Czech Republic, about 60 km from the capital Prague.

The school follows "The school for Europe curriculum" and offer science teaching as well as extended language teaching starting at the first year of studies.

The teachers of the school have created the programme "The programme of supporting and increasing of the foreign language education at ZŠ Kolin V., Ovcarecka 374, which is a part of the EU projects Education for competition. This programme will last until June 2011.
